ABOUT ME

I work on situated and embodied approaches to perception and imagination. But my work also touches on issues relevant to phenomenology and aesthetics.

More specifically, I work on the sensorimotor theory of perception, on the problems that arise with its notion of embodiment, and the compatibility of this theory with some versions of predictive processing. I am currently interested in what this version of the sensorimotor theory has to say about the social aspect of perception.

Along with Adriana Clavel-Vázquez, I am working on a project about embodied imagination, the limits of imagination, and the impact of this on the debates about empathy and fiction. I am also interested in cases of collective imagination.

I've taught courses on philosophy of mind and on perception and imagination. This semester, I'm teaching an introductory course on 4EA approaches to cognition and leading a discussion seminar on collective intentionality.

When I'm stuck with an idea, I chat it out with my philosopher partner, my philosopher sister, and my philosopher brother in law.

When I'm not doing philosophy, I like biking, taking long walks with my dog, doing yoga, and making pizza (mostly, the pizza thing).

My name is long... I usually go by Jimena Clavel. My pronouns are she/her.
